Reem Acra.

Mon. 02/16/2015.

Lovely. Yes, it was. Costumey? Oh HEAVENS, Yes. Annoying... A Mammoth YES! As with her fellow Lebanese Designers, Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad, Reem Acra cannot let go of the obsession with Silly, Aggravating Trifles of Evening wear as the entirety of her collections. It's Incensing to the point of the Vexatious! And when they are done as Cheap-Looking and Derivative as these for Fall 2015 were, It's Doubly Exasperating!

Again, Many pieces were lovely, no one can discount that, But the great portion, With it's Edwardian/Stevie Nicks/Puffball Leg-O'-Mutton Sleeved/Fairy/Witchy elements felt UBER Played out and Stale as a week old Cruller! Anna Sui does this without even taking a breath, and does it much better AND Offers DAYWEAR! Acra just missed the point by a Million Light Years! Daywear would have helped... but i am beyond preaching now... I can't and Won't give praise to Acra for doing the same Tired Ass Shit that She and Saab and Murad do over and over again Ad Infinitum! They Bore me and the more salient recognizing ought be that by now, after SO MUCH repetition... they should be Boring Themselves!

Zero + Maria Cornejo.

Mon. 02/16/2015.

Scan the New York Fashion horizon and look for anyone doing anything similar or comparative to Maria Cornejo... Go Ahead. I'll Wait.....!!! You can't! Maria Cornejo studiously does her own thing, not for Celebs, not for the Press, but for her Clientele who look to her for a kind of "Urban Zen Bohemian" look that she executes season to season with a Peerless and Flawless Deft! Fall 2015 was no exception. The best part, from season to season, Cornejo does not get caught up in her own "Signatures" She explores wide and varied facets of her work each outing and does not rely on the Formulaic for success! That isn't to say her clothes aren't highly recognizable, but it does feel that Cornejo likes working  just at the fringes of Anonymous and letting her clothes do the talking rather than she invest in them a Signature that would make them more... Noticeable!

Fall 2015 found Cornejo in Top Form. Her Easy, Tough Aesthetic was in full bloom, but touched with a Subtle, Organic Fluidity. There was a lot of interest paid to Criss-Cross tailoring and Bias seaming that lent that Liquid quality to the clothes, and instead of fighting against it and trying to toughen it up, Cornejo went about to how to integrate it into her usually Rigourous work and make the blend harmonious! Like the way a Leather Criss-Cross top stood atop a Streamlined, but Fluid Jumpsuit, all in Black. Witness also, How a Sleek, Supple, but not Strict, Black Leather Zip-front jacket meshed effortlessly with a Bias panel Wrap skirt in Ivory! All of this was Exalted by the palette of Black, White, and Grey with a Punchy Lipstick Red thrown in for Contrast!

Cornejo delighted from Beginning to End. There literally wasn't one Exit that was not Interesting and giving the viewer something to be excited about. Cornejo is one of those Quiet, but Influential, Independent forces in the New York Fashion Pantheon. She's content with doing Her Thing, Her Way. And the rest of us are Richer for it!

Thom Browne.

Mon. 02/16/2015.

Thom Browne.

Duality. That was the most obvious subtext to be gleaned from Thom Browne's Fall 2015 collection that found itself taking a cue from the Macabre with it's Morosely Beautiful inspiration of Mourning clothes that was provoked by the Met's Fashion Exhibition, "Death Becomes Her" which was a Sartorial and Intellectual analysis of the way Women had dressed through the 19th and early 20th Centuries to Mourn and address Death and Loss. Potent Material, to be sure!

But aside from the most apparent idea of Grieving... Fashionably so, there was the deeper and more provocative context of Duality. One could recognize it immediately, the Contrapunctal nature of all the Models dressed in Black against a throng of Pale, Wan, Models all dressed in White... The rumination of Life and Death, Light and Dark, Grieving and Celebration, it provoked more thought than the collections inspiration of clothes derived from such a Perverse Influence, Death being that Idee Fixe. Browne continued to skew the perception of what was transpiring by taking his own stylistic tropes and rendering them obsolete! Browne has a Penchant for Obstinately tricky and Elaborate clothes... more Art than Fashion. Here, Browne looked like a Couturier of Immense Caliber with his Exquisitely Wrought pieces that defied the paradigm of what we have come to expect from Browne! Not only were the clothes Incredibly wearable... They were Astoundingly Rich and Ornate and Luxuriant! Everything was a Masterpiece of Execution and Flawless cut!

Though the Theatrics are worth mentioning, for they compel the whole vision of the collections Inward and Outward Dichotomy, It's of less importance than the way the clothes spoke on the subject, The opening though, was the Key to the Dual nature of the collection, Models on gurneys, bathed in light, as if the models coming round the Labyrinthine set were either identifying the body of a dead loved one, or as it appeared, a Messiah in Black raising the dead... One could look at it in a totally different light and take it like "Maleficent" raising Aurora from her Deep sleep with a Loving touch instead of a Kiss as proposed by the recent Angelina Jolie/Disney movie... That Death and Love are two constants that can never be eliminated in this world. Grief from Death can only be measured when Love is part of the Equation, truth be told.

How ever much we plumb these Esoteric depths, the clothes themselves have to be the focus. Browne even quite pointedly played on Duality in outfits that mixed Long with Short all at the same time, Layering one on the other or combining something Long with something more Brief, as well in the Contradiction of Staggeringly Extravagant and Complexly detailed and embellished pieces with others of such Monastic Asceticism that they bordered on Anodyne! But all these pieces showcased Browne's Technique for all it's worth... A Short Black Wool jacket trimmed in Fur with a Double-breasted Tweed Skirt suit underneath trimmed in Beads that looked like Black Pearls was brief and Sensual, but Strict! A Quirky layering of Three Jackets atop one another was finished off with a Finger Breaking jacket that was embellished with tight whorls of Black Ribbon and Green/Black iridescent Feathers all encrusted onto it! The Most Stunning impression in the whole of the show... Exit No. 12. An unadorned Black Sheath dress that communicated Mourning and Class in One, Sublime, Fell Swoop!

Browne placed his finger squarely over Button of a rather disconcerting Fashion debate. How exactly can the glorification of the dress of Mourning still be Celebratory and Exciting? It's too delicate a subject to properly address here, but Browne showed that when you shine a light onto a Terse Concept, Beauty can still be wrought from it. This was certainly a Subject with Provocation deep in it's bones, But the Deft and Gorgeous way Browne sounded his voice in the conversation bordered on Brilliant and for a ever so Fleeting Moment, ignited a Spark in one's imagination... Oft times, all that is needed is a Spark to start a Wildfire!

Donna Karan New York.

Mon. 02/16/2015.

Well, Do you want the Good News or the Bad News first? OK, the Bad News is that at the time of the show back in February no one knew what was going to Develop between Karan and LVMH in July, which saw Karan step down from her Company and relinquish designership of DKNY (which had already been given to Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow of Public School to reinvigorate!) and that the Donna Karan New York line will be put on hold (Indefinitely) and not show in September. Donna said the move was so she could Focus on her "Urban Zen" Lifestyle Brand... And I'm Cindy Crawford! Yeah, Right, Donna! The truth of the matter is that she was Forced out by LVMH, no one has any proof except a working brain that God gave them to realize what's really at play here.

Since this is about the Collection in February i'll get back to that and address Donna's Woes some other day! Now the Good News... Donna wont be Designing her label anymore! As of late, including Fall 2015, Karan has made a Joke of her once Pristine Eponymous brand with increasingly Perplexing and Bewildering collections that, even though a Label has to Grow and Change, Altered the DNA of the brand so much that it became oft times, Shocking and more to the point, Enraging!

Karan has been possessed by this Urban City Hippy Zen Earth Mother vibe that has seen her try to make her clothing more "Natural" and "Organic" what it made them was Shit! Fall 2015 as a Swan Song will not go down favorably upon reflection in the History Chronicles. It was what has become a Typical Flaming Hot Mess of a collection! Inspired by the Nightlife of New York City (Original, Donna! Very much So! *Eyes Roll!*) she confused and muddled her silhouettes and cuts with totally unneeded Origami folds and Obi-like wrappings that were Inorganic to the clothes and helped them in no way other than look Stupid!

Compound this with oddly sheer/solid skirts and layers, asymmetry, tucks and a Doom-laden palette of colours and it all came Crashing into the Median at 80 miles an Hour! The collection was D.O.A! It's a challenging ordeal to parse out something to compliment, for every single outfit was Tortured by an overdone aspect that Drowned the clothes. A Greenish/Brown Trench hearkened back to the good old days of Yore, but as one Exit could only do so much to excite! Everything here looked as it it had been consciously made more difficult and refractory for it's own sake and was fighting against itself where a less Convoluted approach would have help matters immensely!

It's sad to see the label sink like this. It was once a Beacon for what Women Worldwide Aspired to dress like. Donna Karan equated Power, Unapologetic Sexuality, Sensuality (Bruce and Demi in those ads... I mean, Right...???) and the New York way of Luxury, not Fussy and Ostentatious, but Tough and Raw! Not anymore. Those days have been lost for good. Where Karan's head has been in recent years is a mystery of which the combined forces of Poirot, Holmes and J.B. Fletcher couldn't Deduce the solution to!! One could say it's been firmly implanted Up her own Ass and it'd be Crass, but it also would not be Far Off, Either!

3.1 Phillip Lim.

Mon. 02/16/2015.

While not every aspect or idea in Phillip Lim's Punk and Grunge influenced Fall 2015 collection worked out for the best, on the whole, the collection was a Strong and Inspired one for the designer filled with Excellent Sportswear for the Urban Fashionista. There was a definite Tough flavour to the clothes, one made more for Downtown in the Bowery than Uptown on 5th Ave, though recontextualized into the Uptown Lexicon with different pieces it would fit in.

Lim offered up Blanket Checks as his only conceit really to print and kept the rest of the collection confined to Dark, Rich tones and Neutrals on both sides of the coin, Light and Dark. This lent something of a Bleak Chic appeal to the clothes that as the show progressed became more and more welcome. When Lim was on the mark, the clothes were fully appealing and finely honed, Especially Evident in a Charcoal Gabardine Pantsuit and it's counterpart in a short Slim Coat.

The Harnesses and Straps that Lim employed on an oft repeated Asymmetric apron "Skirt" as he called it, and in Chest straps became quite labored by the end of the show and could have been done away with in a number of Outfits, also the issue of an Unflattering bulkiness was popping up in some pieces, it was distracting, Yes, yet did it ruin the overall mood of things, Not really. It just felt as if Lim could have had a more Scrupulous eye on those pieces.

All told though, it was a Highly successful showing from Lim and had a very individualistic and compelling style of it's own. Lim's collection offered a new proposition to the Fashion conversation and for the most part, offered it quite compellingly! Lim should keep on this pace and keep giving us new things to think about on what Fashion is!

Pamella Roland.

Mon. 02/16/2015.

Pamella Roland.

Pamella Roland's a Hometown Gal, and I will always be a Champion of hers! I do have to say that, even with being a Champion for her, Her Fall 2015 collection was a little Underwhelming, a little Staid and a bit Basic. The collection didn't feel as Luxurious and Expensive, Rich and Glamourous as per Roland's Usual! It felt like it was holding itself back from trying to bust out at the seams with something Fantastically Deliciously Gaudy and Extravagant, which was something this Sedate collection could have used.

Let's not get off on the Wrong Footing, however... There were some Excellent (This is after all Pamella Roland, Ya Know!?!?) Pieces strewn To and Fro, an Absolutely Beguiling Electric Blue Strapless Cut-work Velvet gown was a Retina Blasting Delight and exhibited that needed bit of Extroversion the collection was missing, A Body-Hugging sleeveless Black Cocktail/Evening number was all the more Sexy for it's Stripped back Asceticism and a Bronze sleeveless dress also was displaying that sense of Restrained Sternness even though it was decorated with Crystals along it's neckline and pockets.

Roland also hit the Daily Double with a Wine coloured Chiffon Embroidered gown that Had all the Esses in Tow, Slinky, Sexy, Sensual, Stunning! And Damn, if Ms. Pamella doesn't know her way around some Sequins, as she displayed in a Black Sheer long-sleeve gown that was decorated with Swooping Whorls of stripes in Gunmetal Bugle Beads that Glistened like Jewels in Moonlight! Roland surely knows what to do to make Her woman Drool with want, and she accomplished it here, She just needed to let herself go a little more and Dazzle us a little more... For we all know she can!

Milly.

Mon. 02/16/2015.

Nothing too much exciting to Report from Michelle Smith's Milly Label for Fall 2015. Smith said she was inspired by Grace Jones, Potent Material indeed, but the show never manifested the Spirit of that Wild Diva. The collection in fact, while being full of Good, Wearable clothes, just didn't feel like much of anything was being said that was Original or worthy of being associated with Ms. Jones! It was a Lackluster effort Punctuated by flashes of something Bright and Interesting.

A Bright Yellow Croc Textured Coat and a Vivid Purple suit were about the few highlights from the collection. Smith tried some new things and injected a Futuristic look into her pieces, but even though that effort is to be applauded, in the context of the whole of the collection, nothing was truly Memorable. Smith is a better designer than this, her Fall output was Adventurous but ultimately, Banal.
