Very few designers know how to delight the Eye with such Firmly Confident and Eccentric Color and Print Mash-ups as Paul Smith. Opening his Fall 2014 show with just such colour combos produced a Thoroughly Optimistic tone for his collection. It also produced some of the best clothes Smith has produced in a good while. The collection was Sure-Handed and Laser focused from Fore to Aft. Juggling Men's Haberdashery and Pajama Dressing with Foulard Prints and Bohemian Quirk lent to a Mix that was Percolating with Slightly Askew Charm!
In his opening, Smith was channeling Le Smoking in the truest sense of the word, Silken Robe dressing in Lavishly Opulent Paisley and Foulard prints gave a Sensuality to the clothes that was Palpable. Take Exit No. 2... A Riotous Paisley All-In-One with wide legs had Simple execution, yet immense Sophistication and Louche Ease! An Aubergine Striped Dressing gown over Foulard print Pajama Trousers gave more than A Whiff to Grandfather's Drawing room at Exit No. 7, but translated into a Womanly Mould, It reeked Elegance!
After this opening, Tailoring and Men's Suiting ideas populated the rest of the show and sometimes recalled touches of this earlier part of the show. A Belted Maize coloured Coat at Exit No. 14 was of a Special Ilk for it was cut with such attention to detail that it became Indispensable to a Woman's Wardrobe. The Black Pinstripe Pantsuit at Exit No. 19 was Throwing off Sparks of Magic too! Finally, the Satin Jumpsuit with the Tuxedo Lapels and Deep Neck at Exit No. 30 was Killing It, Without Mercy!
Smith has been designing for longer than many designers have been alive and is still out there doing things his way and Keeping his Name in the Fashion Populous. He isn't a Superstar by Modern Standards, but in the Game of Fashion, He's An Old Master, Like a Rembrandt, Or Vermeer. And like those masters, His work is not just for the Moment, It's for A Lifetime. This was just his latest Masterwork, And it was A Beauty!
That's All.
Bye4Now!
